St Georges Street Green: BANUELO
Sept 25th – Oct 27 th
Stew Gallery is proud to present selected sculptural works by Pete Blunsden.
In conjunction with this gallery showing, we are also exhibiting, a previously unseen work entitled ‘Banuelo’, on St. Georges St. Green opposite the Playhouse later in September. From his early working career, Pete has used metal, and gained much experience from eight years at a sign makers firm. But during four years in the Merchant Navy, travelling the world as he maintained the engines, he felt “he became part of the machine”, and that “experiencing the physicality of the moving parts brought together as a whole ” has always stayed with him. When he returned to the UK, Pete became a Plater and Welder before illness, caused by overworking, forced him into a two-year hiatus. During this time he focused on his drawing, and later began a Norwich School of Art Foundation course where he concentrated on painting. After struggling to communicate the physicality of objects through paint, he shifted his focus onto sculpture as he entered his BA in Fine Art. At this point he felt “responding to the reality of an object instead of just looking at it, became my focus and so my 'personal sculptural language' was slowly forming.” After some use of other materials, he found that using steel, the material he was now so familiar with, enabled him to explore the spatial issues, rhythms and forms that were becoming so important.
At the Art School, Pete met sculptor John Foster, who invited Pete to take part in an International Workshop that John was holding at his studios in Hardingham. At the same time Pete took up one of Johns vacant studios, and the job of Sculpture Technician came up at the Norwich School of Art, a post that Pete has now held for over twenty years.
He has exhibited and attended workshops here and the USA; attended one of the ‘Triangle’ Workshops in America; and was awarded a grant from Pollock Krasner Foundation, New York. He has completed an MPhil in sculpture, and a PG Cert in Arts Teaching. Today he continues to teach, make sculpture, and exhibit. The main concerns of his practice still continue to revolve around those spatial issues, rhythms, and forms, yet evolving as perceptions change. This exhibition shows a cross section of some of his works.

'The Way I See It' by Rod Penn presented by Stew
15/02/2010 - 15/03/2010
11:00am - 4pm
Monday - Saturday

Penn, 32, sensitively captures the human spirit in a diverse array of subjects, ranging from families living beside a railway track in Indonesia to UK-based burlesque performers. His flawless ability showcases alternative ways of living and sub-cultures in an unpretentious and unguarded manner.
“The work in this exhibition is a personal journey from my life in Indonesia back to my like in the UK. The title reflects how I feel that photography as a medium has the capacity to
reveal to others how you interpret your surroundings.”
Rod is working as a freelance photographer in a variety of genres. He has a degree in Art History and a Masters Degree in International Relations. He has spent much of the last 10 years living in Indonesia and travelling in Asia and South America. He is currently based in Norwich and is the official photographer for a number of events and projects in the region.
'The Way I see It' is the first Stew curated photographic exhibition -
“STEW is proud to host the work of this remarkable nascent photographer. It kicks our
new programme off in fine style”- Kevin Parker, gallery co-ordinator.

Tribute
02/11/2009 - 07/11/2009
10:00am - 6pm

A multi-disciplinary group show exploring the idea of tribute in many forms.
Tribute is a group show, looking at the evolving ideas of the tribute. Tribute traditionally means “a sign of respect or admiration” however it comes laden with connotations.. We have chosen artists who can respond with these ideas. Working with themes of identity, memory, history, pop culture, legacy, architecture, and personal narratives to explore tribute. It features a range of work from sculpture, installation and photography, through to film, illustration and textiles. Minimal curatial intervention means the work can communicate creating larger narratives and tensions.
Featuring work by Shaun Camp, Klubbclub, Siobhan Fitt-Stirling, Dean Khalil, Brittany Bathgate, Dale Wylie, Esther Marcia Lyons, Amy Deacon and Mathew Parkin.
Ethna Dillon proudly presents at Stew an exhibition of paintings by Jamie Andrews and Alec Cumming.

Chris Hann on Alec Cumming
Alec Cumming is a Painter in the sense that he uses paint to convey his experiences of landscape and figure. His paintings are experiences of the landscape, of himself in the landscape, and what he feels and carries back to the studio.

Within each work is a message. It would be easy to look at them as a random selection of toys embedded into paint, but consider the titles, look at the toys themselves and how they are arranged, and think about the colour use. These are not bedtime stories, but they have the power to make us think, laugh out loud, feel uncomfortable, or challenge our views.

First Group Show

STEW is an artist led gallery and studio space in the centre of Norwich. The name is derived from the shared ideal of food playing a central role in the space and analogous to the diverse practices within the building.
Our first group show is a showcase of the multitude of creative practices that take place within the studios. In conjunction with Open Studios, visitors to the show will have the opportunity to meet the artists in their studios and to take a tour of the rest of the building. Studios are open for visitors on 16-17, 23-24 and 30-31 May. During these weekends we will also be offering a series of free workshops, for full details see the website or pick up a leaflet from the gallery.
PRIVATE VIEW
Mon 25th May 5:30-7:30PM

19/05/2009 - 21/05/2009
10am - 5pm
Mirroring the Visual Studies degree course, the essence of this show is about preventing boundaries from limiting imagination and ambition. Indeed, those boundaries become the catalyst for true creativity whereby the artist’s message relies not only on the expected aesthetic, but also on analytical and problem-solving skills, upon seeking out and optimising the resources available. It may take some artists out of their comfort zone which encourages fresh ways of thinking, different approaches to work and creates a whole new set of possibilities hitherto undiscovered.
The size rules for this brief are strict, but are not designed to promote compliance. Artists are encouraged to recognise the limitations and make them teeter on the very edge. There are no restrictions on theme, medium or construction so what you will witness is a remarkable array of artistic diversity from a group of vibrant, inventive, multi-disciplinary artists each with their own story to tell.

Only when we eat food do we ever really create a close contact with the natural environment, a reassurance that we need food to survive. A feast is a crowd of people gauging themselves on tasty delights through ceremonial traditions of hope, adoration, celebration, ritual, and for pure indulgence. Feast is an exhibition of seven artists whose interest in food amalgamates together creating a banquette for the senses.
Edible, adj.: Good to eat, and wholesome to digest, as a worm to a toad, a toad to a snake, a snake to a pig, a pig to a man, and a man to a worm. ~Ambrose Bierce

Get Out! 14/03/2009
8ish @ Stew
Following on from the success of his two previous works ('Get In' 2002 and 'Structure' 2005), Lewis Ross and the STEW Gallery are proud to present the world premiere of his new film 'Get Out' featuring some of the finest skaters in East Anglia. The evening will also be soundtracked by DJ's and the space will be furnished with skateables and a bar.
Further to this we will be taking details for individuals and groups interested in submitting for a skateboard related show at STEW later this year. We will be looking for innovative works and stories relating to and coming out of this culture. A small panel will be assembled to curate the show pencilled in for September 2009.
We look forward to seeing you there for both occasions.
